Feeling a bit whimsical today, so for my writing inspiration I’ve reached into that vast repository that is the writing of Dr. Seuss. By the title of this post, you might think I’ve gone as crazy as Horton the Elephant, or the Grinch.

You might be right. But sit tight, whilst I enlight. (Dr. Seuss would be so proud.)

Was Dr. Seuss just looking for a catchy name that’s easy to rhyme when he named the Whos in “Horton Hears a Who” and “The Grinch That Stole Christmas?” I’ve researched that question, and even in the wealth of information on the Internet, I’ve not yet found an answer.

But whether intentional or not, Theodore Seuss Geisel was onto something here.

As a military kid, I approached the question of “home” from a unique point of view. We always lived far from my parents’ family homes, and we never stayed anywhere longer than 3 years. So it was my goal that my kids wouldn’t live like that. They would have a place to be from, roots, family nearby, friends who had known them since they were little.

With great thanksgiving and rejoicing, I can state today for my four 20-something kids, “Mission Accomplished.”

When I was younger, it was all about the where. But with age, I’ve learned that the place has very little to do with it. Now, home is about the who. Any physical building, any piece of land will do, so long as the people are there. My wonderful, loving wife. My kids and in-laws. Dear, sweet friends who have invested in our lives, some for 30 years or more. My “Whos.”

In fact, we all live in Whoville, don’t you think?

So, what about heaven, our eternal home? Surely that’s a place, right? Well, let’s think about that…

In the new Jerusalem, there won’t be a sun, or a moon, or lamps. God himself will be the light. (Revelation 21:23)

“No one comes to the Father except through Me.” (John 14:6)

So, whether in this life or the next, home is indeed a Who. Rest in that.
