It was a sound from another time.

Not my time, but from well before me. When people filled halls just to hear the hallowed sound of human voices, singing. Nothing more. Nothing less.

And it was far more than enough.

A few nights ago, five men, from a land more ancient than America, brought to Kansas their music of love and sacrifice, of patriotism and loss, in a way that only living, breathing human beings can do.

They just sang.

What makes us human? More than anything else, it’s the ability to create, to take the resources that surround us and change our environment, and in this case, to create beauty. Man’s creativity has brought technological advances beyond our wildest dreams. Some of that creativity can be experienced in exactly the same way as people did centuries ago. It connects us to ages past, and speaks to us deeply.

The sound of the Five Irish Tenors’ voices in flawless harmony was just one of those experiences.

But judging from the advanced ages of almost everyone in the audience that night, our hurried and distracted world is in danger of missing out on that connection to our past.

So as Jeremiah taught,

This is what the Lord says, “Stand at the crossroads and look,

Ask for the ancient paths,

And where the good way is, and walk in it,

And you will find rest for your souls.” Jeremiah 6:16

And God, the Ancient of Days, who created beauty even before time began on Earth and gave some of that creativity to his creation, gave my soul rest that night.

  1. Good post, Mike.

It would have been more effective if you had included a link / YouTube video of these guys singing.

Any time you add a link to a blog post, you’ll have a better chance of increasing your following. And if you include “YouTube” in your keywords – that automatically will boost you in the SEO.

YouTube is becoming just as powerful as Google. Just an FYI for future posts.
